The Museum of Science & Industry and Proshred will be hosting a community Shred-a-thon on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at MOSI. Local residents and business owners are invited to help prevent identity theft by bringing their obsolete documents to the roundabout in front of the MOSI Partnership School where Proshred will have one of their specially designed shredding trucks on site to destroy documents for $10 per box. All proceeds will support MOSI’s education programs.

 

Attendees are invited to watch as their documents are instantly destroyed by one of Proshred's massive, high speed destruction machines. After the destroyed documents are turned into confetti, they are then recycled. 

 

Florida leads the country in identity theft. Florida had twice as many complaints as 43 other states and triple the complaints of more than two thirds of the country, according to the Federal Trade Commission, as of February 2012. Identity fraud is the fastest growing non-violent crime in America. Impacting nearly 9 million victims each year, close to 75 percent of cases are a result of paper documents getting into the wrong hands. Proper destruction of confidential documents is a critical step in ensuring that you, your family members and your customers don't become victims. Other items that can be shredded are computer disks, credit cards and ATM cards.
