Scout Programs at MOSI

Enrich your scouting experience at MOSI through our exciting hands-on science and technology workshops and overnight fun during our camp-in events.

  

Scout Workshops are a fun and exciting way to complement your badges and pins. Fees include an instructor-led workshop with all materials and MOSI admission for the entire group. Special discounts for group IMAX shows and lunches are available. Sign up for one of our scheduled programs or arrange for a private workshop or camp-in by calling 813-987-6000.

MOSI has exciting, technology and science-packed experiences for girls with a variety of interests. Through hands-on, challenging and fun activities, MOSI helps Girl Scouts working on Badges and Journeys as well as provide new and exciting opportunities to explore careers and the sciences found in everyday life. Participants are welcome to explore MOSI’s exhibits before or after programs.

Registration closes one-week prior to workshop date. No registrations accepted the day of the workshop.

 

Brunch with the Butterflies

Business Savvy Girl Scouts

Saturday, May 3, from 1 – 4pm

Program Fee: $18 per scout; 1 adult free per 5 scouts

Level: Cadettes

Badge: Entrepreneur

Learn what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur as you launch a pretend company! Create a name, logo and tag line; write a business plan; make your pitch to potential clients and investors; film a commercial; and more! Leave MOSI with the skills you need to launch your own business!

 

Brownie Detectives

Saturday, May 17, from 10a.m, - noon

Program Fee: $12 per scout; 1 adult free per 5 scouts

Level: Brownies

Badge: Senses

Use your five senses to gather clues and solve a crime at MOSI! Look carefully for clues left behind. Listen to voice recordings of suspects. Determine the identity of mystery substances left at the scene of the crime using your sense of smell, taste and touch!

 

Red Carpet Thrills and Chills!

Saturday, May 17, from 1 – 4pm

Program Fee: $18 per scout; 1 adult free per 5 scouts

Level: Junior

Journey: Entertainment Technology

Roll out the red carpet for a movie premiere featuring a stop-action animation film you create! But don’t stop there! Gets hands-on experience with other aspects of entertainment technology as you build roller coasters and catapults, create special effects using MOSI’s green screen, learn how to use face paint to transform actors into monsters and aliens, and more!

Note: This program takes place at the Withalacoochee Forest. Transportation is not provided. 

 

Brownie Game Designers

Explore the different states of matter through a series of fun, silly, messy science experiments in MOSI’s STEAM Lab!

 

Fashion Sketch Artists

Saturday, June 28, from 9a.m. - noon

Program Fee: $18 per scout; 1 adult free per 5 scouts

Level: Juniors

Badge: Drawing

Learn about different drawing techniques as you create a fashion line! Try out different drawing tools, learn how to shade, create a logo for your fashion line on the computer, and more! Then put your collection together in a portfolio to take home.

 

Splat, Drip and Dribble: Brownie Painters!

Saturday, June 28, from 1p.m.-3p.m

Program Fee: $12 per scout; 1 adult free per 5 scouts

Level: Brownies

Badge: Painting

 

Explore all the different ways you can paint and set your inner artist free! Paint a still life with thick impasto paints like Van Gogh; splatter and drip paint on a canvas like Pollock; create a giant mural like Rivera; and more!

 

Private Scout Programs:

Reserve a Private Scout Workshop or Private Scout Camp-In if you cannot make one of the scheduled dates or if you are interested in a specific topic and program for your Girl Scout group. The minimum required for a private workshop is 15 scouts. 

 

CAMP-IN PROGRAMS

 

Trash Fashion Show Girl Scout Camp-In

Friday, May 16, 5 p.m. – Saturday, May 17, 11 a.m.

Level: Brownies, Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors, Ambassadorsrecycled-dress-magazine-newspaper-flowers-trash-fashion

Badge: Household Elf, Science of Fashion

Program Fee*: $35 per scout; $24 per adult; 1 adult free per 10 scouts

 Calling all fashion designers and models! Spend an evening learning about how you can reduce, reuse and recycle- and turn trash into couture fashion! Transform plastic bags into tutus! Create jewelry out of old gift cards! Make a dress out of newspaper and garbage bags! Upcycle discarded items and create a unique look for the runway. Participate in a fun fashion shoot and then strut your stuff on the MOSI runway for MOSI guests! The camp-in includes the Trash Fashion workshop, pizza dinner, cereal breakfast, an IMAX film and exhibit exploration time.

 

Private Scout Camp-Ins:

Reserve a Private Scout Camp-In if you cannot make one of the scheduled dates or you are interested in a specific topic for your Scout group. The minimum required attendance for this type of Camp-In is 40 Scouts.  Registration for public scout programs closes two-weeks prior to camp-in date. 

 

 

Registration Information:
Call 1-800-995-6674 to make reservations. Scout groups must register with a minimum of 40 Scouts at least one month prior to the Camp-In. We encourage partnering with other groups to fill a Camp-In. A single payment for the group can be made by credit card at the time of registration or in person by check at MOSI. If you must cancel the reservation, you need to do so at least 20 business days prior to the Camp-In to receive a refund. A $50 cancellation fee will be deducted from your refund. 

 

 

 Boy Scout Programs

 

 

Boy Scouts develop new interests and earn badges through MOSI’s programs and badge workshops in hands-on science and technology explorations in the science lab, outdoors in our nature preserve or in our technology centers. Participants are welcome to explore MOSI’s exhibits before or after programs.

Scouts are responsible for bringing Blue Cards to Merit Badge workshops. MOSI does not provide Blue Cards.

Workbooks for Merit Badge workshops are available under the description of the workshop. Items that are required to be completed prior to the workshop are circled in the workbook and scouts are responsible for bringing a copy of the workbook to the workshop. Blue Cards will only be signed if all required items are completed in the workbook.

  Nova and Supernova Workshops

 

New STEM Boy Scout workshops available at MOSI! MOSI is proud to offer STEM workshops required for the Nova and Supernova Awards for Cub Scouts, Webelos, and Boy Scouts. Workshops will engage scouts in hands-on activities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Please check the Boy Scouts of America website to determine which workshops are required to earn each award or contact our Groups and Outreach Manager for more information.

 

Electricity Merit Badge

Saturday, Apr. 26, from 1 – 4p.m.

Program Fee: $18 per scout; 1 adult free per 5 Scouts

Spark your imagination as you build an electromagnet, build circuits that operate lights and motors, and learn about electricity in your home.

Bernard Harris Supernova Award Workshop for Boy Scouts

Saturday, May 10, from 9am -  6p.m.

Program Fee: $30 per scout; 1 adult free per 5 scouts

Complete requirements for this Supernova Award by spending the day at MOSI shadowing a MOSI staff member and learning about careers in STEM related fields; training to teach a STEM- related workshop; and creating a presentation about the scientific method.

 

Computers Belt Loop & Pin for Cub & Webelos Scouts

Saturday, May 10, from 10 a.m. - noon

Program Fee: $12 per scout; 1 adult free per 5 scouts

Discover the power of the computer inside and out!

 

Forester Pin for Webelos Scouts

Saturday, May 10, from 1 – 3 p.m.

Explore the field of forestry as you learn about local trees and plants in MOSI’s Back Woods Nature Preserve.

 


Cub & Webelos Scout Caving Trip: Geology Belt Loop & Pin

Saturday, May 10, from 9am – 2pm

Program Fee: $24 per scout; 1 adult free per 5 scouts

Journey to an underground world where water has carved out caverns with unique textures and patterns. Search for wondrous creatures that make these dark and wet chambers home while climbing and crawling your way through stalactites and stalagmites. Spelunk your way to fun as you learn about geology using Florida’s caves system!  Note: This program takes place at the WithlacoocheeForest. Transportation is not provided. 

 

Photography Belt Loop & Pin for Cub & Webelos Scouts

Saturday, May 24, from 10 a.m. - noon

Program Fee: $12 per scout; 1 adult free per 5 scouts

Crop, change and distort your photos and videos in MOSI’s I-Lab as you learn about the inner workings of cameras. Bring your digital camera and a thumb drive to save your work.

 

 

Engineering Merit Badge

Learn how engineers use science and technology turn ideas into reality.

CAMP-IN PROGRAMS  

 

 Science Myths, Legends, and Nonsense Belt Loop & Pin Camp-In for Cub & Webelos Scouts

 5:00 p.m. Friday, Apr. 4 – 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Apr. 5, 2014

Program Fee*: $40 per scout; $34 per adult; 1 adult free per 10 scouts

This camp-in puts on Mythbusters twist on the Science Belt Loop & Pin requirements! Determine what is fact, myth, legend or nonsense as you explore life, earth, and physical sciences during an evening of wild, messy, silly and sometimes explosive science experiments! The camp-in includes admission to the Mythbusters exhibit. 

 

Operation Hurricane: Emergency Preparedness & First Aid Merit Badge Camp-In for Boy Scouts

5:00 p.m. Friday, May 30 – 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 31, 2014

Program Fee*: $35 per scout; $24 per adult; 1 adult free per 10 scouts

A hurricane is headed towards the TampaBay area and you are setting up a shelter at MOSI! Learn how to prepare for and survive a natural disaster, as well as administer first aid, as you spend the night at a mock hurricane shelter and emergency center. Then take part in MOSI’s annual Hurricane Expo the following day.

First Aid Pre-Requisites: 1 (Tenderfoot #11, First Class #8d), 2, 3a, 3c, 3e, 3f, 4a, 4b, 5
