 Idea Zone Hours:  Monday - Friday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m.

Open Make Nights - Tuesdays from 6 – 9 p.m. (Hours subject to change due to group bookings) 


Idea Zone is MOSI's new “do-it-yourself” laboratory with an open ended platform to allow students of all ages to explore, learn and have fun. Click here for a list of upcoming Idea Zone classes and programs for kids and adults.

Youth Robotics Programs
We're celebrating National Robotics Week all month long. Experience the fun and excitement of building and programming a robot of your making. Advance registration required. Click the programs below to go to the registration page.

Saturday, April 19, from 10 a.m. – noon ∙Ages 6 - 8
Program fee: $15                 MOSI member: $12
Add a bit of technology to your artistic fun by building LEGO robots that can draw artwork to take home.
Sunday, April 20, from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. ∙ Ages 9 - 12
Program fee: $23                 MOSI member: $18
Control robots in the Minecraft world and then play with real robots on our Minecraft course in the search for gold while avoiding creepers.

Saturday, April 26, from 1 – 4 p.m. ∙Ages 9 - 12
Program fee: $23                 MOSI member: $18
Build a fun-filled factory that sorts and delivers candy. Experiment with other robot invention skills.

Adding Arduinos to Robots
Saturday, April 19, from 10 a.m. – noon ∙Ages 12 thru 17
Program fee: $15                 MOSI member: $12
Discover how Arduinos can be used to make working inventions and how they can become the brains in robotics. Learn to work with Arduino electronics and learn how you can use them in robotics by experimenting with ours in this introductory class.
Kids Coding with Scratch
Saturday, May 17, from 10 a.m. – noon ∙Ages 7 - 14
Program fee: $15                 MOSI member: $12

Celebrate Scratch Day at MOSI for this international event! Create interactive stories, games, music and art, then share them online using Scratch, an exciting programming language developed at the MIT Media Lab. Preregistration required. 


Idea Zone Maker Programs

Advance your technology skills and open new possibilities through our workshops using a variety of tools in a collaborative and creative environment. Many of our Idea Zone programs will certify usage to use fabrication equipment.


Family Fun Maker Night - Saturday, May 10, 6 - 9 p.m.

Program fee: $7 per person - MOSI member: $6 per person

Treat your family to a hands-on night of creative explorations and building fun. Program video games, race robots on a track, make art with the laser cutter, build playful gadgets and plenty more. Experience creative play and educational experiences for all ages. Advance registration is recommended. Snacks and beverages will be available for purchase.

Join us for an enjoyable and constructive evening where you can discover how your ideas can come to life with digital fabrication and other technological tools. Take part in a mini workshop or network with other thinkers, inventors, and people who like to play with technology. Take part in an Idea Zone project or bring your work in progress to get help or to share.


Open Maker Nights are free to adult MOSI members and $7 for non-members. Fabrication materials will be available to purchase. Certification programs will be available for onsite registration.


Young Makers Sunday Studio. Ages 4 to 8, from noon – 4 p.m.

Parents and kids, join us every Sunday for a fun afternoon of creativity. Learn new skills and let your artistic side run wild by making something special to take home. Busy schedule? Drop by anytime between noon and 4 p.m.

Program fee: $7 per project - MOSI member: $6 per project


Mini-Marshmallow Poppers - April 20

This candy cannon is too fun to construct and to shoot marshmallows. Just shoot each other outside of IdeaZone.


Laser-Cut Leather - April 27

Plunk some steampunk into your style by burning bracelets and masks with exciting designs.


Clothes that Glow - May 4

Electrify your wardrobe by sewing circuits to make cool fashion items like t-shirts that glow or buzz.


Stomp Rockets Away - May 11

Build a high-flying stomp rocket launcher that uses air to fly through the air.


High-Temperature Treasures - May 18

Learn the metalworking skill of soldering to create jewelry and robotic designs.


Stamping and Chopping - May 25

Stamp out fun artwork by making your own stamps and Chinese chops made with the all-powerful Sugru.


Family Make-a-Rocket - All ages - Saturday, May 24 • 1 - 4 p.m.

Program fee: $35 per two-person team; MOSI member: $25 per two-person team

Take to the family on a high-flying adventure by building chemically-powered rockets from scratch. Design, build and launch your way to a perfect MOSI day in Idea Zone. 


Idea Zone includes a 3D printer, laser engraver, media studio, fabrication lab, simulation center and sciences lab – a full technological playground! The Idea Zone is a place where:

  • A Kindergartner can create a soccer-playing robot,
  • An elementary school student can invent their own toys,
  • A middle school student can create a video game,
  • A high school student can work on industrial design and
  • Adults can take part in the “space race” of rocketry and aerospace design.




MOSI hosts public programming inside Idea Zone on the weekends.  Some of the Idea Zone public programming activities include high-tech gaming and simulations, fashion design, robot building, and science experiments.  


Make your imagination a reality in MOSI’s Idea Zone in one of our weekend play shops or themed weekend events listed below.
